OTAGO MUSEUM

Urban Tribal was presented at the 2018 iD International Emerging Designer Awards in Dunedin, where Rokaiya received the Entrepreneurial Prize. Documented in the Fashion FWD critical-making context, it centres handloom textiles, women’s empowerment and responsible production.

Context

In 2018 Rokaiya received the Entrepreneurial Prize at the iD International Emerging Designer Awards in Dunedin, New Zealand. The presentation placed Bangladeshi design authorship on an international emerging-designer stage.

Research

The work is grounded in a belief that Bangladesh should be recognised not only for manufacturing excellence, but also for design authorship. Urban Tribal has been documented in the Fashion FWD critical-making context.

Material

Handloom textiles sit at the centre of the practice, alongside heritage fibres that appear throughout Rokaiya’s wider work: Jamdani, muslin, jute and folk memory.

04 · Process

Process

Making is treated as knowledge. Women’s empowerment and responsible production were recorded as central themes of the Fashion FWD documentation — not as ornament, but as method.

05 · Outcome

Outcome

The Entrepreneurial Prize recognised an emerging designer arguing that heritage materials can speak in a contemporary global vocabulary. Further process imagery and full credits remain with the studio.
